Today, you will travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Nepal’s scenic gateway to the Annapurna and Mustang regions. Depending on your group size and preference, you can choose either a comfortable tourist coach, private vehicle, or opt for the spectacular 30-minute scenic flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara.

If you travel by road, you will cover approximately 220 kilometers through diverse landscapes, following the Trisuli River for part of the journey. As you move westward, enjoy breathtaking views of the Manaslu and Lamjung Himal ranges. Closer to Pokhara, the stunning Annapurna Himalayan peaks begin to dominate the horizon.

Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel located near the serene Phewa Lake, the heart of Pokhara’s tourist area. You’ll have time to relax or take a leisurely stroll along the lakeside, soaking in the tranquil ambiance.

Pokhara is Nepal’s second-largest city, renowned for its beautiful lakes—Phewa, Rupa, and Begnas—and spectacular panoramic views of iconic peaks like Mount Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Peak) and the Annapurna range, setting the perfect tone before your Upper Mustang adventure.

After an early breakfast, you’ll take a short 20-minute transfer to Pokhara Airport to board a small aircraft such as a Dornier or Twin Otter for a scenic flight to Jomsom. The flight lasts less than 30 minutes and offers spectacular views of the towering Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges on both sides.

Upon landing at Jomsom Airport, which is perched on a ledge above the Kali Gandaki River, you’ll take a short walk into Jomsom town, the administrative center and gateway to the Mustang region. Here you’ll meet the rest of the trekking team and porters; mules are often used to carry luggage on this trek.

From Jomsom, the trail follows the Kali Gandaki river plain. During the rainy season, the route diverts to the right bank for easier walking. The trail is mostly flat and pleasant, passing through a few small tea houses at a place called Ekali Bhatti (Lonely Inn). Here the path splits: one route leads to the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath, while the other heads towards Kagbeni and deeper into Upper Mustang.

You’ll enjoy a gentle, gradual walk along winding trails before arriving in Kagbeni, an intriguing village that reflects strong Tibetan influences in both its architecture and culture. This historic village is the main gateway to the Upper Mustang region and Tibet border. Overnight stay is in Kagbeni.

After enjoying a peaceful night in Kagbeni—a picturesque village marking the gateway to Upper Mustang—you’ll embark on an exhilarating trek toward Chele Village. Today’s journey is especially significant as it officially takes you into the restricted region of Upper Mustang, an area that has long preserved its mystical charm, ancient Tibetan culture, and barren, otherworldly landscapes.

As you leave Kagbeni behind, the trail gradually ascends along the Kali Gandaki River, passing through rocky gorges and sandstone cliffs that have been sculpted by centuries of wind and erosion. The arid terrain, streaked with shades of red, ochre, and brown, offers a striking contrast to the lush Annapurna region you left behind. Soon, you’ll reach Tiri Gaon, a small traditional village nestled against the backdrop of high cliffs. Here, you can witness the simple lifestyle of the local people and soak in the peaceful ambiance of a community untouched by modernity.

The trail continues with a series of gentle ups and downs across dry plateaus and occasional narrow canyons, eventually leading you to Chele (Tshele) Village. Located at 3,045 meters, Chele is a quiet and welcoming settlement perched above steep cliffs, offering incredible views of the surrounding badlands. The village reflects strong Tibetan cultural influences, from whitewashed houses with prayer flags fluttering above to intricately carved mani walls and Buddhist chortens.

As you continue, you’ll reach Samar Village (3,660 m)—a charming hamlet surrounded by poplar trees and red cliffs, offering a short yet meaningful pause in your journey.

Here, you will have the opportunity to visit Ramchung Cave, a revered meditation cave carved into the cliffs. Known locally as Chungsi Cave, it is believed that Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the great Buddhist master, meditated here during his travels to Tibet. The cave is a peaceful, spiritually charged site filled with prayer flags and sacred symbols—offering a unique chance for quiet reflection amid the mountains.

After visiting the cave, continue the trek toward Bhena Village, traversing gentle ridges and arid plateaus. From here, a steep climb leads you up to Yamda La Pass (3,860 m / 12,660 ft). Today’s route offers both a physical challenge and a visual feast, as you make your way to one of the major settlements of Upper Mustang—Ghami Village.

Your day begins with a gradual climb through cultivated fields and a wide, arid valley, passing below the small settlement of Tama Gung, a traditional outpost with a few stone houses and terraced plots. As you ascend, the terrain opens up, and the stark beauty of the Trans-Himalayan plateau becomes more pronounced.

A long and steady uphill walk takes you across the Nyi La Pass (3,932 m / 12,900 ft)—the highest point of your entire Upper Mustang trek. This windswept pass is considered a significant landmark, as it marks the southern boundary of the ancient Kingdom of Lo. From the top, take in breathtaking views of the rugged Mustang landscape, with its maze of canyons, eroded hills, and distant snowy peaks.

After soaking in the views, a gentle descent for about 30 minutes leads you to a trail junction. The path to the right leads toward Tsarang, while you will follow the left trail descending further into a valley carved by the Ghami Khola River. Soon, you'll reach Ghami (also spelled Gami or Ghemi)—a picturesque village built on the edge of deep cliffs.

Ghami is one of the largest and most historically significant villages in Upper Mustang, known for its Tibetan-influenced culture, ancient mani walls (prayer walls), and traditional mud-brick houses. The village is also surrounded by cultivated fields nourished by a rare water source in this arid region. It's an excellent place to observe local life, interact with residents, and appreciate the deep-rooted spiritual heritage of the Lo region.

With an enjoyable overnight stop at Ghami village, the morning starts with a climb up in the middle of a vast valley, as walk leads past Tama Gung settlements, continue a long climb across the head of the valley to the highest Nyi La pass of the adventure at 3, 932 m and 12, 900 feet high.

The pass forms a barrier with its southern boundary of Lo and other areas of Upper Mustang. From here descend for a half-hour to a junction; where a right path leads straight to Charang / Tsarang. A major village of Lo and Upper Mustang.

From here head down below within blue, grey, and red cliffs across the valley to a steel bridge across the Tangmarchu River, the path climbs past to a long and magnificent stretch of Mani a prayer wall, one of the longest around Nepal Himalaya region. The Trek leads to the last climb of the day towards 3,600 m pass, from the top a gentle descent brings you to Charang / Tsarang for the overnight halt.

An interesting village with a maze of fields, willow trees, and a huge five tiers of white-painted Dzong/fort, with a red Gomba / monastery located on the edge of the Kali Gandaki gorge. The village has its own electricity system run by a local hydro plant from a nearby stream.

After a wonderful stop in Charang, an interesting village of Lo and Upper Mustang, from here towards the walled former kingdom of Lo-Manthang.

Walk drops below the blue, grey, and red cliffs across the valley to a steel bridge across the Tangmarchu River, the path climbs past to the long and magnificent stretch of Mani wall, probably the longest one in Nepal.

From here the final climb of the day brings to 3, 600 m pass, after the last pass a gentle descent leads to the overnight stop at Charang, a lovely and interesting village with a row of maze of fields, willow trees, and huge five-storied white Dzong and a Red Gompa located on the edge of Kali Gandaki gorge.

From here our direction heads straight north with a gentle climb, as walk ascends to a large Chorten that symbolizes the boundary between Tsarang and Lo-Manthang. From the top heading to a great wide windswept landscape, and then end the day trek on reaching the walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang. The only entrance to the town-village, using the northeast corner, where walk leads to a short circuit around the wall to reach the main entrance gate.

Entering inside head straight to our lodge and guest-house for afternoon refreshment and rest, and enjoy browsing inside the walled kingdom where nice houses, impressive monasteries, and shops are located.

Within the walled town-village inhabits more than 150 houses with some residents of the monks and lamas/head priest. Houses are closely linked, and the palace and monasteries are located at the bottom portion of this vertical part of ‘L’ shaped houses. The school, health post, police post, and several important Chorten are located outside the walls on the north gate, with the eastern monastic part of the city.
Although the native apparent looks and features of Lo Manthang, the village is quite prosperous and maintains a strong sense of community.

The locals call themselves Lobas, people of Lo, with strong Tibetan influence and practice of cultural economy. Before strong trade with Tibet was disrupted, all of the salt and wool trade on the Kali Gandaki passed through Lo Manthang, and this brought a substantial amount of money to this great village town.

Today’s trek leads you to Drakmar Village, known for its dramatic red cliffs and hidden caves, offering a blend of geological wonder and mythological charm.

The morning begins with a gentle retracing of steps along the trail until you reach Marang Village, a small settlement nestled in the windswept plateau. From Marang, you’ll veer off the main trail, turning west to follow an ancient footpath that leads into a region of towering rock walls and hidden grottoes.

As you approach Drakmar, the landscape becomes even more striking—steep red cliffs dominate the surroundings, carved by centuries of erosion and wind. This area holds deep spiritual significance, with ancient caves used by monks for meditation and legends tied to Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). The village itself is relatively small but offers a tranquil setting and a chance to experience rural life in one of Mustang’s most scenic corners.

Due to the region's high winds and dust storms in the afternoon, starting the trek early in the morning is strongly recommended for both comfort and visibility. Reaching Drakmar by midday allows time for rest and exploration before the wind picks up.

After an early breakfast in Drakmar, you will begin your journey towards Ghiling, retracing part of the route through a different perspective and gaining new appreciation for the spiritual and natural richness of Upper Mustang. The trail starts with a walk past the longest and most impressive stretch of Mani walls—intricately carved stone tablets inscribed with Buddhist prayers and mantras. These sacred structures are not only devotional monuments but also serve as cultural symbols of the Mustang region’s deep-rooted Tibetan Buddhist heritage.

As you continue, the trail leads you across a scenic bridge over the Ghami Khola, after which you’ll arrive in Ghami village, a small but significant settlement known for its traditional whitewashed houses and quiet charm.

From Ghami, your path heads south through the arid yet striking terrain, characterized by ochre cliffs and expansive plateaus. A steady walk of a few hours brings you to the peaceful village of Ghiling, where you’ll stop for the night. Ghiling is known for its ancient monastery and a rare water-powered prayer wheel, which spins continuously with the flow of mountain spring water—an ingenious fusion of spirituality and practicality.

The evening offers a serene environment for exploration or quiet reflection, as you soak in the unique blend of spirituality, tradition, and dramatic landscapes that define the heart of Upper Mustang.

Today’s trek marks your gradual descent from the mystical highlands of Upper Mustang, retracing your journey through familiar yet ever-beautiful terrain. After an early breakfast in Ghiling, begin the day with a steady climb back toward Syangboche village, offering a chance to once again absorb the sweeping views of the Mustang Valley.

Continue your ascent to the Yamda La Pass at 3,860 meters, a scenic high point that provides stunning vistas of the snow-draped Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri ranges, as well as the vast, wind-sculpted landscapes of the Mustang region. This is an ideal spot to pause for photographs and reflection on the incredible journey you’ve undertaken.
From the pass, the trail gradually descends through the traditional villages of Bhena and Samar, where stone houses, chortens, and mani walls reflect the rich cultural tapestry of the region. You’ll follow the route alongside a tranquil stream, which guides your way back into lower altitudes.

Passing through Gyakar village, home to ancient ruins and cliffside dwellings, and then through Chele (Tshele), the entry point to the Upper Mustang restricted zone, you will arrive at the charming village of Chusang (also spelled Tsusang). Nestled at the confluence of two rivers and flanked by dramatic red cliffs, Chusang is an ideal location to spend the night.

The village offers a peaceful ambiance and is surrounded by apple orchards and intriguing rock formations. Enjoy your overnight stay with a sense of accomplishment as your trek nears its final stages.

Your final day of trekking begins with heartfelt farewells to the mystical highlands of Upper Mustang. After breakfast in Chusang, you retrace the scenic trail toward Chele village, gradually descending through deep canyons and along the eroded cliffs that define the unique Upper Mustang landscape. The terrain becomes more familiar as you leave behind the restricted region and re-enter Lower Mustang.

The route follows the banks of the Mustang Khola, where colorful geological formations continue to impress until you reach Kagbeni, the spiritual gateway to Upper Mustang. Here, you may pause for a brief rest, reflecting on the incredible journey you've just completed through this once-forbidden kingdom.

From Kagbeni, your final stretch leads you on a gentle downhill walk through the wide, windswept Kali Gandaki River Valley—famous for being the world’s deepest river gorge. The path eventually brings you to Jomsom, a bustling town and administrative center of the Mustang District. Located at the confluence of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Jomsom is where the Annapurna Circuit and Upper Mustang Trek converge.

Jomsom is home to the Thakali people, an ethnic group known for their hospitality, Buddhist heritage, and culinary traditions. The region is also famed for its apple orchards, producing some of the most delicious apples and apple-based products in Nepal, including cider, brandy, and dried fruit.

After a restful night in Jomsom, your journey begins with a short walk to the airport terminal. Here, you will bid farewell to your trekking crew and the loyal porters who supported your adventure through the mystical land of Upper Mustang.

Morning flights are scheduled early to avoid the strong winds that frequently blow through the Kali Gandaki Valley in the afternoon. However, please note that flights in this region are weather-dependent and may be delayed due to unforeseen conditions such as fog, wind, or rain—especially during the monsoon season.

Once cleared through airport security, board a small aircraft for a scenic 20-minute flight to Pokhara. During the journey, enjoy spectacular aerial views of the snow-capped Himalayan giants, including Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range, as well as sweeping vistas of the valleys and villages below.

Upon arrival at Pokhara Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel near the serene Phewa Lake. The rest of the day is free for relaxation or optional sightseeing. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel to rest and freshen up.

• Scenic Flight:
Alternatively, you may opt for a 30-minute scenic flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu. This quicker option offers breathtaking aerial views of the Himalayas and the changing landscapes below. The flight time is subject to weather conditions, but it provides a convenient and memorable way to return to the capital.

In the evening, to celebrate the successful completion of your incredible Upper Mustang adventure, enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional Nepalese restaurant.
